Formed in San Francisco in 1987, Autopsy were part of death metal’s early US vanguard, bringing a filthy, unhurried heaviness that still hits hard. Before this morbid new band began, drummer and vocalist Chris Reifert had already made his mark with Floridian pioneers Death on the classic debut Scream Bloody Gore.

In their first run, Autopsy released four albums through Peaceville Records, starting with the legendary 1989 debut Severed Survival. The band split in 1995, with members later going on to become the driving force behind the sickodelic grime of Abscess.
